Luljeta Demolli, Director of the Kosovar Centre for Gender Studies, was one of the panelists on the panel “Addressing structural barriers to women's participation in politics”. Mrs. Demolli said that gender equality is an important prerequisite for the full realization of human rights. “The Gender Equality Act stipulates that at least 50% of public sector jobs at all levels are performed by women, but the percentages reserved for women are respected only at low levels where influence, responsibility and pay are small, while dominated by men at the highest levels of government.” - she said. She also said that the discrepancy between women's participation in electoral lists (30%) and representation in party structures, shows that there is a need to draw up affirmative policies which will guarantee greater inclusion of women in party governing bodies. Mrs. Demolli also called on the Government to encourage public companies to increase the representation of women on their boards.
