Equality and Gender Mainstreaming Across Borders

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Equality and Gender Mainstreaming Across Borders Project has been implemented from 21 October 2014 to 31 November 2016, with the objective to establish a cross-border network of women organizations active in gender mainstreaming at local and regional level by empowering local NGOs to forward the gender mainstreaming agenda, raising organizational capacities of local women organizations in the project covered area, giving technical assistance in exercising watchdog functions and improving local and national media coverage of women-related topics. Lead Partner: Kosovo Gender Studies Center (KGSC) Project Partner: Association for Advancement of Gender Equality Akcija Zdruzenska – Skopje Co-Partner 1: “Centre for Counselling and Support for Women Dora-Dores” Co-Parter 2: Association Community Development Institute This project aims to provide solution to some of the key challenges in streamlining gender equality into every sphere of life that spread across borders and to establish a cross-border network of women organizations active in gender mainstreaming at local and regional level. The Action of the project brings measurable impact in both sides of the border and proposes to establish and nurture a network of women NGOs who despite their geographical vicinity with one another, have rarely if ever cooperated with one another. In addition, the project aims to promote Gender Balance and Equal Opportunities, Equal participation of marginalized groups and supports links between organizations with same/similar objectives and missions. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:The overall objective of the action is to establish a cross-border network of women organizations active in gender mainstreaming at local and regional level. The specific objectives that of the action will strive to achieve in its efforts to forward the overall objective include:

  • Empower local NGOs to forward the gender mainstreaming agenda;
  • Raise organizational capacities of local women organizations in the project covered area;
  • Technical assistance in exercising watchdog functions;
  • Improve local and national media coverage of women-related topics.

Target groups and final beneficiaries:

  • Local Women NGOs in project implementation areas (border areas between two countries)

This target group represents also the main beneficiaries of the proposed project. With significant resource and know-how deficiencies, and faced with far greater social pressures than their peers from the respective capitals, local women NGOs in the project covered areas, despite their selfless activism, have been unable to achieve desired results Action have welcomed the much needed support and pledged their cooperation during the implementation. In municipalities of Prizren, Suhareka, Malisheva, Dragash, Rahovec, and Mamusha in Kosovo and in Municipalities of Gostivar, Vrapciste, Mavrovo and Rostusa, Tetovo, Bogovinje, Brvenica, Zelino, Jegunovce, and Tearce in Macedonia some of the key concerns identified include: domestic violence, dropouts, inheritance and economic empowerment, reproductive health, discrimination and lack of implementation of gender equality policies at local

The project results:

  • Launch event attended by at least 50 persons and receives media coverage in both countries;
  • Web Portal on Women and Gender Issues in Albanian and Macedonian developed and
  • Two annual general population surveys carried out;
  • Literature on local languages for gender-related policies at EU level developed and distributed;
  • At least 100 Women NGO representatives skills’ are raised on both sides of the border (20 per
  • Capacities of local women NGOs raised through ongoing coaching and mentoring in
  • administration and management;
  • Two small grants awarded for cross-border initiatives through a competitive process;
  • Two regional conferences organized;
  • Four thematic roundtables on different topics organized;
  • Local Women NGOs develop and functionalize volunteer activist networks.
